The Man and The Monster

Forget the hellos, today!  We are just gonna go for it.

Chapter 2: From Go Away to Stay Forever.

August 2009

I hate phone calls, despise them actually, but that first phone call lasted nearly an entire day.  He worked nights and I went to school and worked days.  I still couldn’t seem to put the phone down before 5 AM and I was waiting by it at 2 PM.  He called, everyday, right on time.

Now let me start by saying it definitely took some time for me to warm up to this guy.  I’m nearly 6 feet tall and he stands about 3 inches shy of being considered a tree stump, that posed a little bit of a problem.  For the next few weeks or so, he called and he text and he called and he text.  Then I gave in to his pleads for a first date.  I’m talking Steve Urkel chasing Laura Winslow type pleads.  I had to make him sweat a little.  What kinda girl would I be if I didn’t?

The day had come for our first date and I have a history of being a big fat chicken so naturally, I cancel.  From the sound of it, I pulled an Evil Queen and crushed his heart in my bare hands.  Evil Stepmothers start out as Evil Queens dontcha know?

Twice in the same week I woke up to gorgeous flowers on my doorstep.  We lived an hour apart!  Who does that?  INSANE PEOPLE THAT’S WHO!  Well now I have to go out with him.  Our first date wasn’t your typical first date.  No dinner.  No movies.  We rode around in his old red Dodge Dakota, he had so adorable named “Betsy”, with no destination.  It was the best first date, I’d ever had.  I’m a simple girl.  That’s the day I knew, this guy was going to me my best friend.

A week or two went by and I was going on a weekend trip to Virginia with some family.  We didn’t talk at all those next few days and I was okay with that.  Until… until my aunt had said something to that completely changed the way I felt.  The way I saw him.  Our friendship.  Everything.  She looked at me and said “you won’t have much time before someone else snatches him up.”  I was done.  That is all it took for me to realize how important his presence was to me, even in the short time we had known one another.  I couldn’t wait to get back home.  I couldn’t wait to get back to be his girlfriend.  When I told him over the phone, you’d have thought I had killed him again.  “ARE YOU SURE??” “REALLY SURE?” Umm… well talk me out of it dude.  Yes, I was sure.  I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.  Then he said, “I want you to meet my son.”

Well… there’s the sweat again.

The Man Behind the Monster

Hey ya’ll.  I hope you rushed back to hear the beginning of my story.  Just like any story,  it may take some time to get to the good parts but if you stick with me I’m sure you won’t fall asleep… well… maybe not… I don’t know your life.

Chapter 1: The Day My Life Changed… Forever.

Since this entire blog is based on the fact that I am a mother and a stepmother I thought it best that I tell you about my road to becoming the StepMonster.  So here we go, I hope your ready to see me laugh and cry, and I do mean ugly cry like that chick on MTV.  I might even vomit a few times so stay tuned.

July 3rd, 2009

I was sitting in the sand on Holden Beach, NC watching my nephew jump the waves.  My mothers phone rang.  It was my aunt who was down in Wilmington for the weekend with my uncle on a business trip.  They talked for a few minutes and then I heard my mom shout, “Well what about Mindy!!?”  Umm, excuse me?  What did I do this time?  I’m usually in trouble when those two ladies get to talking.  Then my mom asks, “would you want to meet someone?”  Uhhh… no.  I had just recently rid myself of a someone, I certainly do not need another.  “Oh, come on, just meet him, what can it hurt?”  Last time I checked it could hurt…a lot.  “Well there is one problem. He smokes.” And…”Has a son but I said that wasn’t a problem.”  Well I do love kids and you can quit smoking.   My sweet mother, and when I say sweet I really mean someone who can guilt you into anything.  “Oh I forgot to mention, he’s a Marine.”  She’s a good lady, that Momma.  “FINE! I’ll meet him, but if I don’t like him it’s ya’lls fault!”  “Good. They will be down this afternoon.”

So here I am getting ready and putting my face on.  Nervous as all get out.  Wait?  Why am I nervous and why on earth am I putting makeup on?!?  Oh yeah,  I’m a girl sometimes.  As I’m warming up to the thought of meeting someone new and trusting my aunt that he doesn’t look like the guy from the Goonies, I hear the car pull up and at this point I’m sweating.  Why the HELL am I sweating????   I walk out to introduce myself and there he was…

I’m gonna be totally honest here, I wanted to avoid this guy like the plague!  At this point, I had some serious issues with facial hair and I am pretty sure he was trying to enter a Tom Selleck look alike contest.  After spending all afternoon inconspicuously staring at him from across the room, I decided I’d give him my phone number.  I still hadn’t convinced myself I’d ever see him again… or had I?

Tom Selleck, right?

Then there’s this guy!  Is he not frikin’ adorable!?

See you next time for The Man and The Monster.

Disclaimer:  I’m not a jerk, I’m just written that way.

The Mom Behind The Monster

Hey ya’ll!  Here I am.  First post.  Freakin’ out because I have no idea what I’m doing.  I’ll probably talk a lot about crap you don’t care about: the husband, the sons, the dog.  Ya know, the same thing everyone else on the planet wants to tell you about!

First things first, let me tell you about myself.  I’m a stay at home mom.  Movie characters are my bestfriends.  I am in the middle of a two day long date with Ron and Harry at this very moment.

Oh and I also like doughnuts. Mmmm, doughnuts.

Let me introduce you to my crew.  Yes, I have to call them “my crew” because they are my only friends.  I mean… I’m talking to my computer in hopes someone might hear me.

Ok so…

This is me, Hugh, and my husband Josh on a recent day trip to Pilot Mt. State Park in NC.

My boys, Terry and Houston.  Terry is my stepson but he has been “like mine” since before he could speak.  His mother is one of my best friends but that is a story for another day.  It’s a long and good one!

Last but certainly not least is our pound puppy, Stark.  Can’t forget the fur babies!

So there ya have it.  Thanks for the view and I hope you come back when I have more interesting things to say.  I’ll likely bitch about something… or someone.  It’ll get fun, I promise.
